Water Spot Remover — the fast fix for hard-water and mineral stains
The short version: Undrdog Water Spot Remover (WSP) is an acidic chemistry designed to dissolve calcium, magnesium, and other mineral deposits from paint, glass, gel coat, and hard surfaces without pulling out a machine polisher. Wipe on, work it, rinse off. It's the tool you reach for when sprinklers, hose bibs, hard-water washes, or salt spray have baked spots into a surface that soap and clay can't budge.
Who it's for: Car owners, boat owners, and detailers dealing with mineral-etched water spots that come back within days of a fresh wash — and anyone tired of chasing white ring stains with a rag and elbow grease.
What water spots actually are
A "water spot" isn't dirt. It's a mineral deposit left behind when water evaporates on a surface. Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium, and when that water dries in the sun those minerals crystallize onto whatever they were sitting on (USGS — Hardness of water).
There are three kinds of water spot:
- Type 1 — Surface mineral deposits. Sits on top of the coating or paint. Wipes off with a mild acidic remover.
- Type 2 — Etched water spots. The minerals literally etched into the clear coat because the deposit sat under heat for too long. Requires machine polishing to remove.
- Type 3 — Industrial fallout / iron. Not technically water spots, but often lumped in. Requires an iron remover.
WSP is engineered to handle Type 1 in a single application and to reduce Type 2 severity before you polish.
Where WSP works
- Automotive paint and glass: hose water spots, sprinkler spots, hard-water carwash residue.
- Boat gel coat, aluminum, and glass: saltwater deposits, freshwater lake spotting, spring-launch prep.
- RV, camper, and trailer exteriors: long-parked hard-water accumulation.
- Home glass and hard surfaces: shower doors, exterior windows, hard-water stains around fixtures.
How to use WSP correctly
- Cool surface, out of direct sun. Acidic chemistry works best on a surface below ~80°F.
- Rinse the panel first to remove loose dirt.
- Apply WSP to a damp applicator or microfiber towel. Work into the panel with light pressure.
- Dwell 60–90 seconds. Longer for stubborn spots.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not let the product dry on the surface.
- Follow up with a pH-neutral wash to reset the surface.
If spots persist, they're likely Type 2 etches that need machine polishing. Do a two-step polish, then re-protect with HCC or Undrdog Pro so the water-spot cycle doesn't repeat.
Safety and handling
- Wear gloves and eye protection. WSP is acidic.
- Do not use on hot surfaces or in direct sunlight. Rapid evaporation causes streaking.
- Do not leave on surface longer than 3 minutes. Rinse immediately after dwell.
- Not for use on: unsealed natural stone, brushed aluminum trim, or anodized surfaces without spot-testing first.
- Store upright, tightly sealed, in a cool dry location.

Frequently asked questions
Will WSP damage my ceramic coating?
Used correctly — cool surface, short dwell, thorough rinse — WSP will not remove a properly cured ceramic coating. If the coating is fresh (under 7 days cure), wait until it is fully cured before using WSP. Repeated aggressive use on any coating will shorten its service life; treat WSP as a corrective tool, not a routine wash chemistry.
Can I use WSP on glass?
Yes. Automotive glass, home windows, and shower doors all respond well to WSP. On automotive windshields, avoid contact with unsealed wiper rubber.
Can I use WSP on chrome or aluminum?
Spot-test first. Uncoated brushed or anodized aluminum can dull with prolonged acid contact. Polished chrome is generally safe with a short dwell and immediate rinse.
What if the spots don't come off?
Those are almost certainly Type 2 etched water spots that need mechanical correction with a machine polish. Once corrected, apply a ceramic coating to reduce future etching.
Can WSP replace clay bar?
No. WSP dissolves mineral deposits; clay bar removes bonded contaminants. Both belong in a serious detailing kit — use WSP for water spots, clay for bonded roadfall.
Is WSP safe on marine gel coat?
Yes. Gel coat handles WSP well, and it's especially effective on the calcium-heavy spotting you get after saltwater and hard-water rinses. Rinse thoroughly.
How long does one bottle last?
A typical bottle handles many full detail sessions. Coverage depends on how heavily spotted the surfaces are.
Will WSP prevent water spots from coming back?
No — it removes existing ones. To prevent future spotting, either coat the surface with a hydrophobic ceramic (HCC or Undrdog Pro) so water sheets off before it evaporates, or dry the vehicle immediately after rinsing.
