Pre-cut, class-legal sail numbers for the International Optimist dinghy, sold one digit at a time so you can build any sail number. Available in red, black or blue, in 230 mm (9″) and 300 mm (12″) heights.

Which size do I need?

• 230 mm (9″) – the Optimist class size. IODA sail measurement requires sail number digits between 230 mm and 240 mm tall, so this is the size to use on an Optimist racing sail.
• 300 mm (12″) – for larger dinghies from 3.5 m to 8.5 m, such as the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7. This is not the class height for an Optimist sail.

How many do I need?

Sail numbers go on both sides of the sail, with the starboard-side numbers placed higher. Count each digit in your sail number and order two of each. For example, sail number 2471 needs two each of 2, 4, 7 and 1 – eight digits in total.

Applying your numbers

• Work on a clean, dry sail laid flat on a smooth surface
• Pencil a straight base line first and keep even spacing between digits
• Rub each digit down firmly from the centre outwards to remove air bubbles
• Check the current IODA class rules for exact positioning before you apply
