Marlow Double Braid Rope: A Sailor's Guide to Choosing the Right Line
Share
If you've shopped for sailing line recently, you've almost certainly run into the term "double braid." It's the most common rope construction on sailboats for good reason, and Marlow, a brand that's been making rope since 1767, builds some of the most trusted double braid line on the market. Here's what the construction actually means, how Marlow's different double braid lines compare, and how to pick the right one for your boat.
What double braid actually is
Double braid rope is built from two parts: a braided core for strength, wrapped in a separate braided cover for grip, feel, and UV protection. That two-part construction is what gives double braid its combination of low stretch, a round and consistent shape that runs cleanly through blocks and clutches, and a cover that can be stripped back or spliced when the rope needs to be customized for a winch drum or shackle. It's the reason double braid has become the standard choice for halyards, sheets, and control lines across most cruising and racing boats.
Marlow's double braid range
Marlow doesn't make just one double braid; it makes several, each built for a different job.
Blue Ocean Doublebraid is Marlow's eco-conscious option, spun from their trademarked Blue Ocean yarn made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. It keeps the handling, strength, and splicing ease of Marlow's original Doublebraid construction while cutting down on virgin plastic, making it a good all-round choice for sheets, halyards, and general-purpose line where you don't need a Dyneema core.
D2 Club is built for sailors who want to upgrade from standard polyester line without re-rigging the boat. It uses a lightweight Dyneema® SK75 blended core to cut weight and reduce stretch, but keeps the same strength and diameter as an equivalent polyester braid, so it drops straight into existing clutches and winches with no modifications needed. It's an easy way to get a meaningful performance upgrade on sheets and halyards.
Excel Control, Excel Fusion, Excel R8, and Excel Pro round out the performance end of the range, each tuned with different core and cover blends for racing-specific jobs like control lines, halyards under heavy load, and lines that need to run fast through blocks without sacrificing grip.
Choosing the right line for your boat
A few questions make this an easy decision rather than a guessing game. First, think about what it's replacing: if you're swapping a worn halyard or sheet one-for-one, match the existing diameter so it fits your current clutches, cleats, and blocks without any hardware changes. Second, consider how much load-sensitivity matters for the job. A mainsheet or halyard that benefits from minimal stretch is a good candidate for a Dyneema-core line like D2 Club, while dock lines and general-purpose sheets do perfectly well on a straight polyester double braid like Blue Ocean. Third, think about splicing. All of Marlow's double braids are built to be spliced rather than knotted for a cleaner, stronger, longer-lasting termination, and we carry the splicing tools and needles to go with them.
